about

The Clientele and Birdie are playing a special gig for American magazine Chickfactor in conjunction with the Hangover Lounge club at the Lexington on Friday July 11. So the Hangover Lounge invited both bands to contribute a song to a 7” picture disc.

The Clientele, newly active after a 5-year recording hiatus, have just seen the reissue of their first album, Suburban Light, go top 30 on the USA Billboard LP charts.

On A Summer Trail is up there with the very best of their material. An Englishness by way of The Kinks, intricate melodies like The Beatles, fierce passion like Television, high and sunny like the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and rain-soaked melancholy like Felt.

Birdie are Paul Kelly and Debsey Wykes, guitarist and backing vocalist with Saint Etienne. In 1996 Alan McGee paid for them to record a demo. McGee was too busy claiming 18 Wheeler and Heavy Stereo were the next big thing to listen properly to Spiral Staircase.

What an addition Birdie would have been to Creation then! Spiral Staircase is a miniature masterpiece of Left Banke psychedelia and Laura Nyro pop.

Like The Clientele - whose albums sell 20-25,000 in America - Birdie are way more popular outside the UK. Nonetheless, both bands have strong UK followings. Birdie brought over 500 people to their comeback gig at London’s Union Chapel 2 years ago. This latest Chickfactor gig sold out very quickly.

Everyone there will get a copy of the picture disc on entrance. Anyone who wished they were there can buy a copy.

just to reiterate - if you are coming to the show, there's no need to buy a copy
